Senior Film (Finally)

I recently realized that I hadn’t yet put my senior film online, so here it is.

I shot reference footage of my friend Grant Harwell at an animation desk in Montgomery Hall. I then exported the reference into frames and recreated every third frame by posing different people sitting in the same place. The shooting took place over 3 weeks, and since the camera was not always in exactly the same position, it shakes a bit. That’s the nature of stop-motion though (or pixilation, to be more precise). The shooting was also done entirely at night to avoid dealing with meddlesome building staff. (The other SCAD animation students will know to whom I am referring.)

My Geeky MacGyver Moment

I just came into possession of a used somewhat older PC that I am repurposing as a media center PC. I wanted to set it up in the living room and network it with my primary PC down the hall in my bedroom. It didn’t have a wireless card though. I had one sitting around that I haven’t been using because the antenna broke off a while ago. I didn’t really want to pay for a new wireless card when I had this otherwise perfectly fine card on my hands. So what’s a resourceful geek to do? Make and wire up a custom antenna of course!

Another Duck?

Eh, what can I say? Ducks are fun. I did this one for a group blog my friends have started up called Sketch Frolic. We are going to have weekly prompts for everyone to work from. This first one was “Sea Monsters.” Check out the blog here!
This is also my first experiment with Autodesk Sketchbook Pro. That’s a pretty nifty program right there.

Senior Film Visual Tests

So, I have completely rebooted my senior film into something completely new! It will now be done in a form of pixilation. Pixilation is essentially stop motion but with live actors instead of puppets or clay models. The twist I’m using is that each frame is a different person. Here are a couple visual tests my roommates and I today to illustrate this effect. These are (clearly) rough, but they serve as effective proof of concept pieces. Now to refine the technique and the script! Updates will happen throughout the production process over the next several weeks.

Duck!

Ok, so I sneaked one extra bronze sculpture in. I made a mold of a rubber duck that I have laying around. (The same duck that has made other appearances in my sculpture and animation.) Then I cast it in wax and attached it to the same pour cup as the ray gun (see?) so I could get a BRONZE RUBBER DUCK! Yeah, I know that doesn’t really make much sense, but oh well. Why make a bronze rubber duck? Because I could. Also it’s fun to play with.

Anyway, I just finished it today. Instead of doing a patina like the other pieces, I decided to polish this one, mostly for the sake of variety. As it turns out, polishing bronze is a slow and tedious process, but after 4 years of animation classes, that’s not really something that bothers me.
